The hands that took Giyuu away are definitely something else, whether that's supernatural or magical. And if the disease also is... then odds are they're linked. But does the disease attract the hands, do the hands cause the disease, or something mutually beneficial for both sides?

It is entirely possible that, if the disease mutated, or came into contact with another force that helped it transform into what it is today, I wouldn't discount the possibility.

If there were records of what happened here in the past, maybe we could compare it to what's happening now and see if there's any differences. But I think if anyone found something like that, we'd already know?

I do recall we had videos that showcased people transforming and whatnot, though those did not linger. We'll likely have to dig deeper to find something far more tangible.
I believe they're likely to be around somewhere, regardless. There is no conceivable way no one would have not bothered to leave behind a written record...no matter what state it could be in.
